Education

Leonard Cheshire Disability, West African Region, is guided by the Social Model on disability; and therefore focuses on accessing the environment in which People with Disability (PWDs) live. At the central of our intervention strategies is the inclusive education programmes through which disabled persons are fully included in mainstream education system. So far our achievements in this area include:

  • Support for over thirty children with disabilities to access primary education;
  • Establishment of three resource centres in Freetown, Kono and Kabala to serve as a model inclusive education in Sierra Leone;
  • Forty-two youths with disabilities have received training in vocational skills and given micro-credit in Sierra Leone;
  • Forty-eight teachers have received training in inclusive education and special needs issues in Sierra Leone;
  • Another set of fifty teachers recently received training in inclusive education in Kono and Kabala
